Managing to get yourself noticed in the creative arts can be pretty damn hard… but when you are talking about making the big time in London things really will get tough! After all, it’s not as if there are only half a dozen writers and artists who are looking for that lucky break; there are scores of them!!! So just how do you go on to become one of the capital’s capital artists???

Well, the truth of it is (as you have no doubt guessed already) that there is no easy way to make it. To be a success at anything requires a great deal of hard slog. But there is something important to remember which can be of great help… ALWAYS MAKE SURE YOU STAND OUT FROM THE CROWD!!! Being different is vital if you want to prosper in any area of the arts. Initially it will get you noticed (extremely useful) and in the long term, it will ensure that you are kept at the forefront of people’s minds (also extremely useful!).<?xml:namespace prefix = o ns = "urn:schemas-microsoft-com:office:office" />

Of course, finding a way of standing out is not always easy (and it is actually getting harder by the day). But if you can come up with a way of injecting some real originality into your work, then you have as good as got it made! Just think about some of our most famous artists, architects and writers. They have got to where they are today by being different with what they do.<?xml:namespace prefix = o ns = "urn:schemas-microsoft-com:office:office" />

Well, there you have it; not the ultimate answer to ‘cracking it'in the world of creativity, but still a valuable lesson all the same. So bear this in mind the next time you are writing an article or preparing your exhibition stands ; it may be tough to find that breakthrough in the big city, but standing out from the crowd can certainly make things a lot easier!

There are many annual events in London for creative people to get together to showcase their works, make contacts, and land jobs. Everyone who works in publishing knows that the London Book Fair is one of these major events, but creatives who work outside of the publishing industry don’t realise that this fair offers opportunities for more than just editors, publishers and writers.

Far from having such a narrow focus, the London Book Fair should be seized upon by artists and designers as well as those who concentrate on the written word.

Usually held at the Earl’s Court exhibition centre, the vast hall is packed with huge stands run by the world’s major publishers, all trying to outdo each other with fancy pavilions and giant advertising displays. Even the smaller, less well off publishers have well decorated stands, and a quick breeze through the exhibition halls shows that there is a huge variety of literature stands to be seen at each and every booth.

All these eye-catching displays have to be carefully designed, and the more artistic input, the better. At the fair there will be a few specialist design companies exhibiting their knowledge of the book industry and, more specifically, the book fair industry, but there are many more opportunities for creatives to make contacts at the fair.

they all need some design help

Each and every exhibitor needs some design help, so why not take along a CV and a few small, portable examples of your work, or a portfolio of previous samples, and just go from stall to stall, showing what you can do and asking if you can help the company out?

After all, even if a publisher decides that they don’t need your creative input in designing their stand or their displays, they still might need help in future for a book design, an eye-catching book jacket, or an advertising campaign.

A fair is all about mingling, so why not mingle with the literati and find work too?

There are so many creative fields that have come into existence as bread-earners for professionals over few recent decades. London, as one of the biggest cosmopolitans, has been attracting creative talents from all over the world. This is why London has become a hub for creative artists, and for those who love fine arts and works of creative people. However, there are still several professionals who are not yet able to reach the level of success they always desired for the reasons stated below:

Lack of Exposure

Several creative artists, for example, painters who are pretty impressive in the way they work, do not get sufficient exposure to the outside world. This might be because of their inadequate communication skills and introvert personalities.

Poor business communication

Those who are struggling to get their due success must understand the need to communicate about their creative work with the relevant people. For example, for a built up letters artist, communicating with advertising agencies through the right channels is quite important.

Insufficient networking skills

Being socially connected with like-minded people and with those who are interested in your work can really work wonders for you. Thankfully, with the evolution of the Internet as a globally connected platform you can delve into social and professional networking right from your home or workplace. There are several websites and portals that allow you to showcase your skills and achievements.

Lack of belongingness

If you think you are an outsider who has come to London only to get some specific advantages, e.g., to make money, you won’t ever feel belonged here I’m afraid. You should also have a sense of gratitude about the city and its people who have welcomed you. This sense of gratitude can make you blend well with the fellow citizens and can help expand your social circle. This will work for you by creating a good followership and respect in an organic and spontaneous fashion.

Art is a field that requires a lot of creativity and innovation. In such a scenario, it is very easy to lose sight of basic necessities needed to survive. An artist may not think twice about skipping a meal just because he or she is in the right mood. On the other hand, skipping multiple meals is obviously not going to work.

Artists hate the idea of working only for money and do a very poor job at it. The end result is that these people earn far less than what they deserve. This leads to frustration which in turn creates a vicious cycle ultimately affecting the creativity of the individual. It is a must to be pragmatic about the issue. Not being in a position where you can survive is only going to affect your art negatively.

Conducting art classes and helping people paint on fur fabrics may not be an appealing prospect but it may help you earn sufficient funds to survive in a reasonable manner. Relying on your friends or relatives to help you out can be a very embarrassing experience. On the other hand, waiting for the big one to bail you out may not work if the big one takes a very long time to materialize.

The smartest option is to strike the right balance and use your art skills to help people and earn some money. You can devote the remaining time to your field and then try to become the best artist possible. You will required to do this until you become popular as an artist and manage to earn enough to survive.

If you are looking for teaching assistant jobs in the Great Smoke, it is probably the best place to start. However, for the ones creative enough to take the full advantage of London, a career in advertisement is the best way of quickly becoming not only an artist, but also a successful business person associated with a big corporation or even better - running his own business. But how to progress in advertising in London?

Firstly, express your ideas and do not be confronted or intimidated by the competition. The first thing a person needs to do is to direct himself through the process of creative though - pick up a project that a company might be interested it, research the effect of a possible advertisement, pick up the most successful idea and present in an advertisement and a marketing plan. This process would enable you to make several projects and apply with them for the companies that you are interested in.
Applying to companies is not as hard as many suppose. Email the people responsible for the marketing and the public relations within a corporation. Then send them your advertising project and there it is - you have a completed idea with people to enjoy reading it. If you are successful, your idea would be picked up for the next advertising and marketing campaign of the company and you would most probably start working with a team of creative advertisers for the particular company.

However, no matter how easy it might sound, you need to know that you need to put a true love and an extreme effort. Do not go for the obvious ad, always experiment and once the experiment proves successful, you will have the ad of your life and the creative job you have always been waiting for.

If time management software is what will help in managing your job capacity, go for it. There are many creative jobs that can be taken up as freelance if employment is not forthcoming. Who knows, the disappointment of your unemployment may turn to a blessing if it leads you to think hard and come up with a unique creative idea. The first creative freelance job on this list is specialty freelance writer. Depending on your experience, there is money in writing more than most people think. Different types of write-ups can be sold to interested parties and you will not believe the number of people who are interested in that stuff you have to offer. One cans also take up social media consultancy as a freelance job. This may involve spending time on the various social networking sites available in a way that will yield financial gains.

Freelancing in the social media may generate money that you can imagine because social networking is the big market at present and what you know may be sold to big corporations who will definitely have no problems signing you cheques. Another way is to work as a scrapbook design consultant. This can be done in a various ways and part of it is to design and sell directly to consumers. On a better note, the designer may work strictly for organisations who then return the favour with good cash. There are also freelance opportunities in colour consultancy. Here you can consult for interior designers to decide the colours that match. This is for the person who has an eye for correct colour combination.

Since I have first started studying political science and law in London, I have noticed the changes in the urban culture and the aspirations of the young people. It is essential that, as every writer, people reading this article about writing consider the opportunity that modern day cutting-edge research techniques gives to documentary journalism writers who can present quite an interesting piece of information in a quite reader-friendly manner.

The London people are more and more likely to prefer a book based upon real facts that fiction. This is the indication made by several research agents, one of which has been closely working in cooperation with BBC. The trends in the society are manifested quite obviously - the sales of documentary novels are increasing and people are becoming more interested in the documentation of events and facts that have been influencing the world and local politics and affairs.

An example is George Bush’s biographical work along with the words of Tony Blair. But other authors writing about the monstrosities of WWII and about the closing circle of corruption on the high echelons of power is also a quite fascinating focus. The lack of such works can still be observed - personally, I have not yet read a good documentary book in April and I remember there were quite a lot in December and around Christmas. So the public demands it, it only requires the proper people to deliver it. Documentary journalism seems to be the most desired subject area by London people and people across the UK as a whole. Until you read the next one though, you might save up for those amazing Doug Hyde posters - at least they are a piece of art always in demand.

I have to admit that I was always a bit dismissive when I met people at art school who said they wanted to get into fashion. It was probably the art snob in me who felt that fashion somehow wasn’t as worthy a career choice as wanting to be an artist, a sculptor or a writer. I mean, what’s so creative about mass producing jogging bottoms in casual fabrics? That’s probably what most people who work in the fashion industry will end up doing; as in most careers, it’s only a tiny percentage who make it to the very top, to the catwalk shows and high-end fashion magazines.
Every now and then I come across a designer or a collection that makes me think again about whether fashion really is art or not. We’ve all seen photos of stick thin models on the catwalks of Paris or Milan wearing outfits that wouldn’t look out of place in a modern art museum! I saw some pictures of Felicity Brown’s show at the recent London Fashion week, where she had been relegated to some tiny venue, yet the clothes she creates absolutely blew me away. Of course, I’d never wear them – and I don’t just mean that I can’t afford them – but that doesn’t mean that I can’t appreciate and admire her creativity.
And boy, is she creative! She specialises in floaty-looking cocktail dresses, with layers and layers of coloured fabrics that swish and sway as you walk. They hang flat if the model is standing still, but if she feels the need to dance or jump around (not normal model behaviour, I know) then these layers of fabric create amazing, futuristic shapes which you could imagine seeing at Tate Modern, rather than in some fancy West End wine bar.

That might seem the opposite of good advice. After all, in any other business you’d be advised to be as cut-throat as possible; stomp all over your competitors and you’ll get all the juicy work. The problem is that there’s no way you can eradicate every writer/actor/artist who is drawn towards the bright lights if London, so you may as well learn to share. Besides, in this industry, the same faces come around quite often. How awkward would it be if you found yourself interviewed by someone you had screwed over the previous year???

Not only do I let friends in the industry know when I hear of a good job opportunity, but I’ve even been known to give them tips, when I was lucky enough to have some inside information about the project involved. Some of them have been scumbags and not returned the favour, but others have thrown fabulous networking opportunities my way. I’ve collaborated with colleagues to present joint bids for community arts projects, when I know I could probably have done just as well by myself, and I’ve even let my young cousin help out on projects, despite the fact that she’s more of a hindrance than a help! She’s also a very talented script writer, and I can see the day coming when she’ll be giving me a job!

The way I see, the world is us versus them; us being the creative people, the ones with the talent, and them being the commissioners, the bosses, the guys with the cold hard cash and no taste, Which side would you rather be on?

Schools around the world are increasingly focusing on supposedly useful methods of learning such as reading, writing, science, and maths. This is of course essential for every school child — they need to be able to read in order to be able to participate in life in a very basic way. Similarly they need maths to be able to make the sort of basic calculations in order to do their jobs. It’s obvious why people would want this to happen, because giving people basic literacy skills is essential.
But among all of this talk it is very quickly forgotten exactly how important it is to educate everyone in the arts too. Growing up and working in an office to compare landlords insurance all day long is all well and good, but very drab - we should encourage kids to express themselves a bit more, and the arts are a great way of doing this.

The arts make creative individuals who are able to use skills above and beyond the basic literacy and maths problem solving. They are able to analyse and think critically in a much more complex way. Similarly, role play as part of a varied education will teach children important executive function skills and enable them to better listen in future lessons and develop skills such as patience and social understanding that will really help them in their future education and career.
Most importantly of all though, arts education is essential in order to create a thriving democracy where the children understand that there is more to life than school, and that we must work to protect important institutions such as democracy and other things. It’s also important to create children who can express themselves artistically in order to help combat stress and make themselves well rounded individuals, and it’s also necessary for them to have skills that make them nice people well prepared for the journey of life with a commitment to the sort of moral standards that the arts can convey.
